The 44 Scotland Street Series
I have just finished reading the fifth book in this delightful series by Alexander McCall Smith set in Edinburgh. It begun as a serial novel published in instalments in an Scottish newspaper. The four books published so far are:
44 Scotland Street
Expresso Tales
Love Over Scotland
The World According to Bertie
Expresso Tales
Love Over Scotland
The World According to Bertie
The Fifth book is The Unbearable Lightness of Scones, a title that has very little to do with the story lines in this volume but says something about the author's sense of humor, parodic, satiric, and whimsical. Very Celtic. Very Scots.
People tend to either love or loathe McCall Smith's books. I suspect it is those folk who are extremely sceptical and cynical who are incapable of appreciating Smith's ability to use his characters to demonstrate the importance of courtesy and compassion and that these two things can make a difference in this world of folly.
Speaking of folly, Bruce's vanity receives a blow that shatters his world view, Bertie loses one therapist and gains another but gets to join Cub Scouts only Loive joins too. Elsewhere Angus accidently does something possibly dreadful to Cyril's six puppies, a china cup moves from one flat to another and a minor character from Glasgow dies!
Enjoy a visit to Edinburgh and watch out for people who look like the characters.
something to think about!
Smith claims he has seen Bertie and Irene!
