This is the second book in the Aleran Codex series.
I read the first one a few years back and than the library didnt buy any of hte other books in the series until earlier this year so now I'm catching up. I think this series is lesser knwn than the Dresden file books becasue it was mistakenly marketed as beign for the teen market.
Yes the central character is a young boy (well in the first book) but ther'es good world building and characters adults of both sexes can enjoy. Alera is an world like but not quite like our own. A form of telekinesis called fury crafting works. The human Alerans believe they are bonding with and manipulating the local minor elemental spirits. They dont believe in "gods" but for them mountians and rivers really are "alive".
Tavi's uncle has an earth fury called Brutus who manifests as a hound made of rock with emerlad eyes. His "aunt" Isana is a water crafter. Tavi however is one of a small minority with apparently NO fury crafting skills. Ib this book this gives him a tactical advantage dealing with the VORD a race of alien insectiod parasites.
Tavi short for Octavian is now in the Aleran capital training to be a Cursor and serving as an aide to the man who is probably unbeknown to him and nealry every other Aleran his grandfather the Princeps.
The Alerans seem to have descended from a group of Romans who somehow reached this world but there are other races. The Marat are humans or hominids who bond with animals rather than furies and the Canim are wolf like bipeds who may be the actual natives of this world or perhaps migrants like the other biped sentients? Unfortunately the Vord have allied with the Canim.
Can Furyless Tavi whatever his other skills survive the politics and perils of his world?
Well there are three more books in the series.
The whole series is:
Furies of Calderon, Academ's Fury, Cursor's Fury, Captain's Fury and out very soon, Princep's Fury.
I'm enjoying working my way thru them and I think you may too?
