The Albatross Book of Verse
Edited by Louis Untermeyer
Collins 1960 Edition.
Today I want to introduce you to what is still an standard anthology for students of all ages.
A lot of people think of this as an American book but it was an international edition.
It was my first exposure to American poetry as a child since our primary school anthologies focused on Australian and British verse.
My father who only did 3 years of high school back in the forties or fifties when that was normal did an evening college course back in the late 1960s and was set this text for poetry.
This red covered hardback became a valued addition to the family library actually read frequently by all the members of the family except the four legged ones. Our cats and dogs reading skills possibly ended at labels and shopping bags. Possibly. They certainly studied them closely!
This anthology in the hardback edition I have was solidly bound and printed on this thin but strong paper almost translucent one rarely sees nowadays.
It has a great range of verse from the Early Ballads and Songs up to the 20th century.
If you find a copy of this edition in a second hand book shop grab it for a poetry loving or studying friend or relative who has not got one! They will thank you!
It has quality!
If you have read or used this edition share a story with us below?
Which poems inspired or moved you to read more or maybe make your own?
Your local library may have a copy so look for that if you have not read it yet?
