Best Books 2008

This is my list of the books I enjoyed the most in 2008.


David Wishart writes mysteries set in Rome. His main character is Marcus Corvinus with the tiem period being Rome duirng the reigns of Tiberius and Caligula.

2008's offering was IN AT THE DEATH

Other writers in this genre are Steven Saylor (Gordianus the Finder set in late republican rome) and John Maddox Roberts SPQR series.


This year I discovered DEXTER. If you watch the show please also read the three books.
Darkly Dreaming, Dearly Devoted, and In the Dark.


If you want mystereis set in modern contemporary China try Qiu Xiaolong's books.

Karl Schroeder's excellent VIRGA trilogy that begin with Sun of Suns and continued with Queen of Candesce finished with Pirate Sun.

Charlaine Harris doesnt just write about vampires. Try also books like An Ice Cold Grave and Grave Surprise.

Thieves of Baghdad is a reprot about a real life investigation into the theft of antiquities.

Want some fantasy try Liz Williams Detective Inspector Chen series.
The first book is Snake Agent.
Sob I'm still waiting to read The Shadow Pavilion the latest in the series.

Looking for some history reading?
TIMBUKTU by Marq De Villies and Sheila Hirtle.


Dragon Lover? Try Naomi Novik Temeraire Series. This year we had Victory of Eagles and in the next book Temeraire is coming to Australia!

Jack McDevitt gave us Cauldron excellent hard SF.

I recommend anything by Charles Stross or Rudy Rucker!

K.E. Mills' Accidental Sorcerer was an excellent first fantasy novel.

Black Robe White Mist is a book about RENGETSU a noted late 18th c to early 196thc.

Buddhist nun poet painter and ceramicist. It includes images of her work and translations of many of her poems.

Getting back to History.

Judith Herrons' BYZANTIUM The Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire is an excellent enticement to further reading in this area.

Want something that's "Sci-fi" and funny. Read SPACE VULTURE by Gary K.Wolf and John J. Myers.

Interested in Ancient Egypt? The British Museum press published a book by Richard Parkinson about The Painted Tomb Chapel of Nebamun this year.

An interesting biography of Omar Khayyam is that of Hazhir Teimourian who is an Iranian fluent in English and Farsi. The book includes a general background and history and translations of the Rubiayat.

There were many other books I read this year but these are the ones I enjoyed the most!
