RAN AWAY
Barbara Hambly
Benjamin January 11
Benjamin Janvier is a man with many problems.
The Banks have failed in New Orleans and the South which means less balls and less paid work for him as a musician or music teacher. Although a free man of color with medical training from Paris he cant work in his other profession as a doctor / surgeon legally in New Orleans. His wife's school has no students. He's supporting the Undergroud Railway and sheltering runaway slaves in his house and worst perhaps he has to find out who murdered the 2 concubines of an Turkish acquanintace form Paris who is now exiled to New Orleans from the Imperial Ottoman court.
Nearly everyone expect Benjamin believes the "evil Muslim Turk" threw his harem slaves out of the window of his mansion".
Benjamin knows from experience Huseyin Pasha while a traditonalist who refuses to wear Western clothes is not a man who would mistreat his wives or concubines who in fact returned one to her Jewish family on learning she'd been forced by her family to marry him.
He has to find evidence to prove this before he ends out in jail or worse too!
Visit New Orleans inthe 1830s when it was VERY dangerous to be a free man of ANY Color or Creed if you have enemies who envy your freedom social status or and wealth.
