Breasted was a famous Egyptologist and you can find a brief bio on Wikipedia but among the several books he wrote this one has a peculiar nostalgic value for me. It was one of the first books on Ancient History I read as a child. I came across a second hand copy of it recently and couldn't resist buying it. WHY?
It's well bound and though much of the archaeology is out of date the basic outline of facts and observations about ancient history is fairly sound. The style of the illustrations appeals to me also ... line work of a type and style you dont see now as this book first came out in 1916 and then in a second edition in the 1940s.
The black and white plates are just as clear as any modern computer edited imagery and the line art has that sort of detail that actually doesn't always reproduce that well with modern printing..
If you ever come across a copy in a library or buried in a book in the attic don't throw it out without looking at it first. It's suitable for an older child that you want to introduce to the joy of history. I willn't be at all surprised if its available as a reprint. Questia and Google have partial copies available.
Enjoy!
