Harry Turtledove is one of the leading writers of the Alternative History Genre.
This book is the second in the World Beyond the Gap series.
The Glacier that covers the north of the world that includes the Realm of Rausmdal is melting and a gap has opened to lands that have been beyond human access for several thousand years. People who call themselves the RULERS are coming thru that gap invading riding deer and mammoth and killing or enslaving any other folk they enconter, northern tundra nomads or Raumsdalian soldiers and farmers.
Only a small group have any extensive knowledge or experience of fighting the Rulers, a mixture of exiled aristos and adventurers and magicians from the south and northern nomads and shamans.
They end up fleeing from the Rulers across the glacier only to encounter cannibals and a shamaness so powerful she may be their only hope but she's vulnerable to physical assualts and a slingshot injury knocks her out leading to another defeat.
The Rulers are advancing south. Defeat seems inevitable but there is hope.
Visit a world of glaciers nomads strange beasts and magic created by a master of his craft.
The Breath of God by the way is the cold northern wind that moves off the Glacier.
