but what if there were no books to read?

September 7th 2007 06:56

You should read on a rainy day but what to read?

And what if there were no books to read?

It's cold overcast and raining on and off in Sydney.

I read the Sydney Morning Herald and plan to finish the crossword and puzzles later.

What are you reading today?

I have a healthy pile of library books to work through!

I did read a disturbing article earlier today that government funding for public libraries is shrinking yet again and that due to the increase in book prices some under funded libraries may have to consider becoming user pays!

While you're reading on this wet day though hopefully where you are its not raining please consider ways to support public libraries.

I recently added an Amazon Wish List link to my geocities SITE home page.

In the unlikely event anyone buys some of the fiction on the list for me I will be donating fiction once read to the local library!

Do you donate to your library?

Where ever you are dont forget to support public libraries please!

Yeah I know "thought for the day" is not a popular blog theme but this is important!

I plan to ask my library if they need any funding petitions signed when I return a book tomorrow!

I was also disturbed by that news story. How can the government cut funding to libraries when they serve so many purposes in the community, particularly for children and the elderly?

Whenever I visit my local library I see kids on computers together after school, children's reading groups, adult internet tutorials, plus a huge range of people borrowing books, videos, CDs, etc. It would be a shame if people were discouraged in visiting because of borrowing fees. I hate to think of children reading less because of the cost, or pensioners having to pay for this small pleasure!

My belief is that Little Johnnie and his playmates in parliament seem to believe that the average (Liberal) voter earns over 50,000 a year or more, and has amongst other things 10 gigabytes of broadband access and lives in Castle Hill or an equivalent suburb.

Hence all those stupid insinuations that people could afford to pay for new housing if they just stopped spending so much on consumer goods ...

The main reason I have a wireless modem and a meagre 600 MB of boardband per month is cos most job ads are now on line and 30 dollars a month is cheaper and quieter than what I was spending in internet cafes and also I'm trying with no luck to sell art and designs on line!

30 to 50% of the books i have reviewed were borrowed from the library or bought second hand cos I cant afford new books too often!

In my view Local State and Federal Governments shoudl ALL be contributing towards the cost of local libraries!
