The Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire
Judith Herrin Penguin 2007
Judith Herrin a professor of Byzantine History was a few years approached by workemen in her building asking after having seen the sign on her door what byzantine history was?
This book is her excellent informative and stylish answer.
If you do know a bit about Byzantium's long history you will encounter facts storeis legends and data you have seen before but Herrin's knowledge of this area and writing skills allows her to share and bring to us new insights and perspectives.
Whether you know nothing about Byzantium, not even that it's the Latin version name of the Greek name for the colony that later became Istanbul, or you have read up on this area, you'll find this book enjoyable.
If you're a librarian looking for books, yes this boo can be appreciated by senior high school students and be useful to teachers of history, and would also make a good introductory set text reading for university students just starting on this subject.
Enjoy!
