CAESAR'S LEGACY
Civil War and the
Emergence of the Roman Empire
Josiah Osgood
Cambridge Uni Press 2006
An excellent history book which reviews Roman history from the death of Caesar up to the consequences of Actium and Octavians' rise to power using evidence from a wide variety of sources" artifacts, including histoirans, coins, inscriptions, sculpture, and poetry.
Thee's a fascinating chaper of the underlyinhg politics of Virgils pastoral poems and how he and other poets like Propertius and Horace were effected by the Civl Wars and "land reforms" of the late Republic.
I would recommend this book for HSC students upwards. If you're a librarian it will be an excllent addition to the history shelves and yet also of interest to students of archaeology and Latin literature.
Challengingly technical in places, this is not a book for beginning students, but enthusiasts and advances students and scholars will it a challenge worth coping with!
Enjoy!
