Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar
Edwin G. Pulleyblank
I am not fluent in Classical Chinese but books like these help me limp thru original texts!
This excellent book which was published in 1995 would be usful and of interest to students of Ancient Archaic Middleand Classical Chinese along wiht students and scholars of historical linguistics and philosophy and history.
It covers Sond Tone Syntax Word Order Particles Pronounds Adverbs Co-Verbs Verbs Negation and much more.
Evenif you're not capable or interested in learning Classicla Chinese the quotes are informative and interesting since they come from a variety of texts ranging form the Bookof Songs thru to Confucius and Mencius.
The book includes the Chinese Characters along witha transaltion and notes
Here are some sample quotes that caught my eye :
P.28 from Mencius
Those who labour with their minds rule others, Lao xin zhe chi ren, ...
P. 55 Mencius again
What goes out from you will be what returns to you.
Chu hu er zhe fan hu er zhe ye.
P. 81 Mo zi
One must know where disorder arises from then one can control it.
Bi zhi luan zhi suo zi qi yan neng chi zhi.
Good night fellowOrblers!
Time for me to log out!
