A Croft in the Hills
Katharine Stewart
This is a new paperback edition of a book that first came out in 1960.
A croft is a small farm in Scotland. The word itself appears in Old English but seems to be neither Germanic or Celtic but even older.
The Stewart family bought a croft in the 1950s near Abriachan and this book tells you what it's like to set up a croft and (re)develop it and also describes crofting as a way of life and the local countryside and environment.
If you have ever wondered why Highlanders were the great survivors amongst colonists of the Empire you cand attribute their hardiness to the required toughness to survive in the alpine glens of Scotland.
A work that is both educational and enjoyable!
