Dr Siri reluctant Coroner and Physic (he'd rather retire to his hammock) has been sent to northern Laos to find out who the mummy is under the footpath to the President's bungalow.
Using his less than perfect knowledge of forensic science (learnt from an old French textbook) his skills socila connections and experience as a former battlefield surgeon for the Pathet Lao and helped by his assistant Dtui and various restless ghosts and spirits he has to find out what really happened to two missing Cuban medics and a Vietnamese girl who was either their victim or friend and lover.
Hindered by socialist bureacracy gossip and lies Siri nevertheless works out the truth and provides justice using science and spirits!
Satire and mystery combine for a splendid read.
Oh and Judge Haeng does something dreadful to poor Geung!
