In the Wake of Ulysses
Goran Schildt
Translated from the Swedish by Alan Blair.
I've commented before that reading old travel books is the closest most of us will get to owning a TARDIS. This book is probalbly out of print in English and Swedish as the translated Apollo paperback edition I found and bought for $3 in a second hand store dates to 1953 and its original cost was .... dont laugh ... $1.95 US !!!
If you have ever wondered what the Aegean and Greece was like back in the 1950s and what its like to sail thru the islands on a small struggling against rough winds like the Meltemia on a small sail boat with a less than perfect engine you might want to look for this book. You also get to see the islands with a Swedish viewpoint and at life in villages that were remote and rarely visited then. The chapter on Santorini before the Minoan discoveries when there was only one hotel in Thera is particularly striking!
Simple clear prose.
The information about difficulties with currents tides and winds would probably still be useful to modern sailors?
