Ten Reasons You should Read or even buy a copy of HESIOD
in Greek or English
1) Reading Greek Myths in their original context
Did you know the story of Pandora comes from Hesiod
2) Learning Creation Myths from the THEOGONY.
3) Did you know Hesiod's Works and Days influenced Virgil and other Latin pastoral poets?
4) The Theogony lists all the Titans minor and major.
5) Graves' Greek Myths frequently cites this work. Shouldnt you find out why?
6) Most modern mythology reference books draw on Hesiod's Theogony
7) Most of the mythology sites also use this.
8) There are plenty of translations available:
Loeb Penguin Oxford and the various free editions online!
9) It's a foundation Classics. Reading it helps you mena sense of various other later literature and artwork, Greek, Roman, Renaissance, etc.
10)Your child may need to read it.
Then hopefully I will see less stupid questions in Yahoo Answers from kids who think "research skills" is asking someone online to do their homework for them!
