IRAQ THEN & NOW

A Guide to the Country and its People
Authors Karen Dabrowska and Geoff Hann.

BRADT Publications are usually travel Guides (see www.bradtguides.com) and while technically this is a travel guide it is actually a surprising good general introduction to Iraq's history plotics and people. Rather than reissue the 2002 edtion of their guide they instead focuisng on the present . As well as a general history where most guides have boxed text highlighting some problem or scenic place the boxed text is often interviews with Iraqis from a wide variety of backgrounds and political situations.

As it is possible to (almost) safely travel thru the Kurdish areas of Northern Iraqi there is a more traditional section on that.

If you want a quick yet thorough overview of Iraq I recommend this book!
