The Kabul Beauty School
Sounds like an idea only Hollywood could come up with. An American hairdresser from Michigan ends up teaching Afghan women how to becomemodern beauticians from a school and aslon based in Kabul.Yet its true. Deborah Rodriguez's book about her experiences living and working in Kabul details how she started out as an NGO volunteer coming out of a bad marriage and ended up as a teacher and businesswoman married to an Afghan and brings us an insight into ordinary women's lives that is not that of a journalist.
She also explains why in Kabul Beautician training can be "liberating" since its one of the few jobs a woman can do at home or in a business with other women allowing them to either get out of the house or have regular visitors and thier own income without violating traditions or attracting Taliban attention .
I pray to the Muses that if some one makes a movie of it they dont stuff it up!
This book would also be a good addition to a TAFE or High school library sinc eit would possibly appeal to girls who might normally prefer "chick-lit"?
