Little Vampire Women

August 29th 2010 05:57
Little Vampire Women
Louisa May Alcott & Lynn Messina

This particular mashup really should only be read by adults not cos its gory or silly but cos teenagers and indeed adults aware of Alcott's family history will miss out the full meaning of the "humanatarianism" and other gags.
Actually the whole book is full of literary jokes so read it when you're in the right state of mind for that kind of humor!

This sounds like a fun, light read. It seems like there are fewer books being published that don't have vampires in them than those that do! Makes you wonder when this whole undead phase will end though, doesn't it?

As a big fan of the 19th century canon, I always get a wry smile whenever I see another one of these in the local speciality bookshop. That said, I've never been tempted to actually pick one up and read the back cover. I just can't resign myself to investing three hundred odd pages worth of time in a joke. This is especially true now that you can almost fill an entire bookshelf with the things. A series of cover mock-ups would have been enough, I think. There are just too many good, serious books out there to read.

A good point Spring-Heeled Jack... but is it absolutely necessary to be reading "good, serious" books all of the time? Where's the fluffy fun in that?

(I like to alternate, myself. Last book was The Picture of Dorian Gray. Current book? Mia Freedman's Mama Mia. Works beautifully to mix them up, IMO).

Absolutely not. I speak only for my own reading habit, which is characterised by a desire to read all the world's great literature and an awareness that one lifetime is not long enough to achieve it.

That's admirable. Sometimes I wish I were like that too, but I need to escape the serious on a regular basis, even if that means missing out on some genuinely great works of art.

What are you reading at the moment, Spring-Heeled Jack (if you don't mind my asking)?

I've been stuck on Affinity by Sarah Waters for some time now. Not that it isn't a compelling read, just that work and life has been getting in the way. After that it's on to The Annotated Dracula and the Great Dune Trilogy.

Oh dear, I haven't even heard of the first two...

... Dune is on the list for me, though. Perhaps once I've read Little Vampire Women
