It is a fortunate thing that I.J. Parker has found a new publisher and once again we can read about Sugawara Akitada's Investigations in 11th century Heian era Japan.
Akitada is on his way back to his home in Kyoto when he encounters a boy crying by the roadside near Otsu. Still mourning the loss of his own son to the recent smallpox plague he tries to help the boy rescuing him from abusive foster parents and finding his real family.
Meanwhile Tora has TROUBLE a large shaggy dog causing him problems with the neighbours and a new wife Hanae trying to exit the entertainment quarter who has disappeared possibly kidnapped by Fujiwara Sadanori an aristocrat far more powerful than Sugawara.
