More Li HO
A Poem mentioning a White Fox.
I've been skimming through one of my favorite books looking for more poems to share with you. Its
Goddesses, Ghosts, and Demons
The Collected Poems of Li He (790 - 816)
Translated with an Introduction by J. D. Frodsham
1983 NPP Edition also available from Oxford Uni Press 1970

On p. 177 poem 148 starts off with a reference to a white fox which sets the mood.
White foxs are regarded as supernatural beings?
A white fox barking at the moon,
The Mountain wind.
Autumn chill sweeps off the clouds
Leaving an emerald void.
Jade mists on green water,
Like pennants of white.
The Silver Torrent winds at dawn
To the eastern sky.
Beside the stream an egret sleeps,
Dreaming of migrant geese.
Delicate ripples, unmurmuring,
Stir scarcely at all.
Storied crags and twisted peaks
Coil on coil of dragons.
Bitter bamboos for a traveller
Play singing flutes.
It seems Li HO is either dreaming off or visitiing some deep gorge ?
Jade mists on green water makes sense if you remember the chinese valued white jade over green jade!
The silver Torrent is probalby a river name?
"Bitter bamboos" are a type of bamboo used for making flutes.
Enjoy !
