The Calligrapher's Daughter
Eugenia Kim 2009
Najin Han is the daughter of a Yangban (aristocrat scholars) family whose father is so traditional he hasnt bothered to name her since she's a girl and she ends up being named after her mother's home town being the daughter of that woman from Najin.
Over 30 years from 1915-1945 she has to battle her family, bureacracy cultural expectations, from traditional Confucian Koreans, and yet also the Protestant church she is a member of, and the Japanese occupation confiscating her family's lands and art treasures, to get an education, find work, and support her family.
An excellent historical novel inspired by stories the author heard form her mother who came from a similar situation.
