Just wanted to give you all another taste of the Narrow Road to the Interior
OKU NO HOSOMICHI
I mentioned a translation of this work in a recent post and since than I've found a wonderful online website devoted to this book.
www.oregon.edu/~kohl/basho
If I got the URL wrong also check out Wikipedia 's page on Oku no hosomichi!
This poem comes from that work
Summer grasses ! / the strong ones or the hero warriors / dream(s) traces of
Basho was viewing the ruins of Hiraizumi a major city on the north until the wars of the 11th and 12th century Japan. The battle fields and other sites associated with famous warrior heroes was in his time overgrown with grass and weeds or neglected in other ways.
Its a melacholy poem especially when you consider that Basho came from a samurai family and that his grandparents or great grandparents would have told him stories of those earlier conflicts and the more recent battles of the Tokugawa clan's rise to the Shogunate.
