OLD COOKBOOKS
April 17th 2007 11:06
Have you ever read an really old cookbook?
Recently my local library was clearing out old stock and this clearance included quite a few very old cookbooks. Some of them probably should have goen right to recycling but there were a few treasures amongst the trash.
It's all very well having color photos on glossy paper ... and frustrating when your effort turns out differently but there's a certian beauty and charm to an old book.
The feeling of good paper and soild binding. Larger serif fonts. Insights into how our diets have changed.
One of the books I bought was called The Country Cook Book.
It seems to be a 1960s or 70s reprint of a 1937 classic that included recipes and cooking advice dating back to the 19th century. It has methods for pickling food in wooden barrels!
It's so retro its charming and funky and might be useful for people into low tech lifestyles?
The next time your library has a clearance sale check out the tables.
You'll help the library fund new books and might find some treasures amongst the trash?
