It annoys me when I find a really good book that turns out to be the middle of a series. This means I will feel compelled to hunt down every last previous tome! Painted Veil is the second book in hte Baroque Mystery series set in Venice in 1734.
The author is a opera fan and her lead character is a castrato singer Tito Amato who is trying to find the killer of his Opera House's scene painter a talented young man Luca who was in love with a Jewess called Liya. He appears to have been involved in some kind of scam selling fake relics to raise money so he and Liya could migrate to the Americas and marry without the condemnation of boeht of thier communities.
It's the middle of a long hot Venetian summer and teh murder is blamed on Liya's cosuin who was par tof the relics scam. There's also a mysterious masked Dr. Palantinus and a medley of other characters.
This novel is both a historical mystery and a drama lovingly rendered.
Enjoy !
