The Powder Puff Derby

March 12th 2008 10:46

The Powder Puff Derby of 1929

The true story of the first
Womens Cross Country Air Race.

Gene Nora Jessen

Colorful Personalities. Sabotage. Malfunctions. Accidents. Danger.

This race had it all!

With no radio or radar or markers the women pilots had to make their way from Santa Monica to Cleveland flying by day only and avoidng storms moutains and in one case male pilots buzzing thier planes and practically every day the appalling sexism of the media of the day. Altho supported by Syndicated Columnist Wil Rogers and Wiley Post well known male pilots and "media celebrities" the women were patronized and criticized by others.

An excellent book on aviation history and womenin early american aviation!

Enjoy!
