Peter Grant wanted to be a London copper but after taking a witness statement from a ghost he's forcibly transferred into an apprenticeship with London's last surviving wizard, Chief Inspector Nightingale.
Now while learning about the laws and techniques of magic (codified by Isaac Newton!) he's dealing with a turf war between feuding river gods, vampire nests, a dog called Toby, burning out his mobile phones and other electronics, everytime he uses magic, a series of murders, and a malign spirit of vengeance who wants to turn London's streets into an Punch and Judy performance art event that will not be the least bit funny!
