ROMAN DETECTIVES

If one regards Literature as a land and each Genre as a Province or City then Historical Mysteries is a recent subdivision and the sub genre of Roman detectives a street that getting new houses every year?

By Roman Detectives I mean books in which the Mystery is set in Rome or the Roman Empire.

If you're not familiar with the Genre here's some Series Characters and Authors to look up!

John Maddox Roberts SPQR series set in the Late Republican period just before the Civil Wars. The detective is an aristocrat who having finished his military service is now running for public office.

Marilyn Todd's I Claudia have a female Claudia Seferis who has married her way into the Middle Classes and has an on and off love interest who's a member of the Roman Security Services. She's currently in Gaul dealing with her husbands wine business and being Claudia swept up into investigating any local mysteries.

Steven Saylors character is Gordianus the Finder and the stories are set about halfway thru the Civil Wars about twenty or thirty years later than the SPQR series.

David Wishart's character is Marcus Corvinus a member of the Imperial classes who'd rather not be involved in politics or with the Emperor Tiberius or any of the factions of that court but he and his wife and their crotchety slave butler and foster daughter keep having adventures whether they want them or not.

Falco the Informer has worked his way up out of the slums to the extent that the Emperor Vespian and his family owe him favours for problems solved by Falco and his family.

He started out as a one man operation in the slums and now has a firm / extended family / team of himself his brother in laws his wife ( who are from an senatorial family) and his other various in laws nieces nephews and sisters ( who certainly are not senatorial )

and of cos there's the dog NUX a small scruffy animal of indeterminate breed.

For those of you familiar with this genre please feel free to add to the list so we can share the pleasure with others who may not have discovered this genre yet!

Like the sound of the dog best, Julie.

Would you call this a case of Nepotism?
