S.M.Stirling The Sunrise Lands

October 16th 2007 01:11
I have previously mentioned S.M. Stirling's Emberverse.
The latest book starting a new trilogy is

THE SUNRISE LANDS

S.M. Stirling is a best seller Alternate History Writer in the US and elsewhere and this book once again demonstrates why!

The first trilogy in the Changeverse, Dies the Fire, The Protector's War, and A Meeting at Corvallis, introduced us to a world in which all high tech and a lot of low has ceased to work.

Something or someone has changed the laws of physics very selecltively. No Electricity but storms still generate lightning. Gunpowder and explosives no longer do more than fuzz and burn slowly, very very slowly, nuclear reactors have dimmed and been damped down, and steam and internal combustion engines no longer work.

Humanity has been reduced to using mediavel technology water and windmills and some hydraulics and thats only in the places where engineers survived the first years of the Change when society break down and there were massive faminine and plagues.

IN Oregon this means the centres of population are Corvallis where the University Faculty took control, the Bearkillers, a defensive alliance of farmers and warriors, lead by a former commercial pilot and ex Marine, whose fatehr in law is a trained engineer, the MacKenzies, a group of Wiccan. neopagans lead by their Chieftainess and High Priestess June MacKenzie, and up north centred on Portland, the PPA, street gangs allied with SCA fighters who have set up a neofeudal society with knights in armour and cavalry.

Elsewhere on this Changed Earth, 90 per cent of the population has died, varying in places, from 50 % to nearly 100% and many survivors have become neosavages, barely human.

IN Europe there is a new empire arising lead by the British monarchy who was evacated by yacht to the Isle of Wight. Survivors there is mainly people who made it off shore to Islands that had stockpiles of food .

The Papacy remains but moved to the hills of Umbria. Singaporeans survived by a mass evacation to the mainland. Austrlia is ruled from Tasmania!

The characters who were children in the first trilogy Rudi and Mathilda are now adults.

A team of professional scavengers looking for metal and artifacts featured into the desolation that is now the eastern USA and reached Nantucket where the Change started.
Only one came back with a message for Rudi to come to Nantucket.

Now he and a few companions must make their way past hostile forces to Nantucket.

One of those hostile forces is the army of CUT a nasty mutaed cult combining right wing militia ideology with New Age theosophy and an agenda of conquest.

Rudi and company are swept in their war with the Mormons and the United States of America, well a semi military regime lead by General Thurston operaitng from Boise Idaho.

American SF fans probably have read this book but I only just got my copy a few weeks ago!

Read it IT ROCKS!
