Yes there are talking cats. Yes they solve crimes. NO they are not cute well not icky cute!
Joe and his Lady,Dulcie, and young Kit,a former feral, and their on and off allies amongst the feral clowder of semi wild cats that live in a ruined house up above Molena Point are talking cats. No one knows why and no one knows they can talk accept for a very few trusted human friends.
Taking a gift of mice to a non talking mother cat Joe discovers signs of a body and a murder and decides to track down the murder. The murderer is terrifed of cats and this leads the cats into great peril but also leads to finding the murderer who is also a thief who has been stealing form the homes of people the cats like.
What makes this believable is Murphy's skill at depicting and contrasting SoCal suburbana with a cat's eye view of human society and criminals. Things like abandoned gardens and building sites or patios seen from rooftops and the importance of moon and mist and much more take us into a world familiar yet strange in which cats solve crimes and the darkest evil disguises itself as "normal" humanity.
Even if you hate cats the Joe Grey series are well crafted with genuine mysteries.
Try a vist to Molena Point and stalk and hunt with Joe and the others!
