SUETONIUS
The 12 Caesars
Robert Graves' Translation of this Latin Classic which first came out in 1957 was reissued by Penguin Classics in a revised edition in 2007.
Whether you read it in Latin or English, the first edition or the second, or a translation NOT published by Penguin, it is one of those Classics you really should read. Some reviwers claim its too gossipy but Suetonius was a high ranking Imperial official ans had access to records and books since lost.
This work contains the Lives of Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Vitellius, Galba, Otho, and the Flavians, VEspasian, Titus, and Domitian, and hence covers the first century of the Roman Imperium, the end of the Civil War and the Republic, and the extension of the Pax Romana over Europe.
You can read it for pleasure and if you know someone doing Ancient History at Senior High, HSC, or University buy it for them as a gift if they dont already have a copy.
Do read it!
