The Owl's Watchsong

June 12th 2008 14:46

The Century Traveller series reprinted Classics of Travel writing.

The Owl's Watchsong
By J.A. Cudden
A Study of Istanbul

is a reprint of a book first published in 1960 and reprinted in 1986.

Is such a reprint worth reading. Are its descriptions of 1950s Instanbul relevant now?

YES! This is the sort of book that proves the argument that literature can be a time travel device. The author's knowledge and observations of Istanbul past and HIS present allow us a view of post war Istanbul befor ethe modern skyscrapers rose up. Many of the details are still valid today and there are exquisite and useufl descriptions of shirnes, churches, cisterns, gardens, and ruins, and other aspects of life in Istanbul,.

Whether your interest is travel or history, Ottoman or Byzatine Istanbul, architecture or scenery, you can experience pleasure with this work.

Enjoy!
