The Chinese have finally found out what happened to the missing Celestial egg they sent to Napoleon and they're not happy. In this world's China Temeraire, who finds out that his Chinese name is Lung Tien Xiang, as a Celestial, the draconic equivalent of the Imperial family, would be treated as a prince and be living in a palace pavilion not an open grove of trees.
They want Temeraire back in China! Needless to say if you have read the first book Temeraire refuses to be parted from his Laurence so its off to China with the crew battling a sea serpent and a storm to get there and when they get there making new enemies though Temeraire does get to meet his mother and other dragons and enjoy a culture in which dragons get paid for work and can read and write unlike England.
Defending his captain Temeraire makes a deadly enemy of a cousin the white Celestial Lien.
We also find out why the Chinese sent Napoleon the egg.
The next book in the series is Black Powder War!
