Vampires Versus SF!

Vampires Versus SF!

I like good SF and F. I also read some Vampire books.

Yesterday I picked up Blood Maidens by Barbara Hambly from the library.

You may have read her excellent Renfield novel or the two other earlier books about James Asher and his encounters with vampires. She's also written various Fantasy and SF novels and an excellent historical mystery series about Benjamin Janvier and 19th century AfroAmerican physician in New Orleans.

Renfield when it came out promptly appeared on the new books shelf.
The latest Benjamin Janvier didnt. I found it by accident doing a catalogue search.

Blood Maidens was bought by the library almost as since as it came out.

It's not chick lit but does have a very vampirish cover and several female vampire characters hence the title.

A recent SF book by a female author who hasnt yet done any vampire novels to my knowledge is Bujold's CRYOBURN. This has been out since November yet my library STILL has this on order yet Bujold is as major and excellent a writer as Hambly! Cryoburn however is a SF novel with no vampires. Miles Vorkosigan has been asked by his cousin the ruler of Barrayar to investigate a cryonics firm. Miles well has had prior interesting experiences that make him over qualified to be an investigator.

Are libraries buying vampire "literature" of any quality before they buy SF?

Anyone else noticed this trend?

I hope they're not adopting a Borders style policy of if its not a popular author it doesnt appear in store. You'll just have to order it on line yadda yadda.

Or wait and wait for the library's budget to won it to buy a copy?

But why oh why can't SF get the same respect as Vamplit?

By the way if you're tired of vampire "light" chick lit and the oh I must include an orgy/orgasm every chapter or two of the book to slwo down the plot and hide how sparse it is school of "erotic" romance fantasy do try Hambly's books!

If you're sick of only seeing large thick space opera SF in Borders check out Bujold's Vorkosigan series. Oh and there is some romance and relationships as well as good writing in both author's works.

There's room in bookstores and the library for high quality fantasy and science fiction as well as lighter fiction.

More SF please!
