A World without Copyright?
This blog is a response to an article by Graeme Philipson in the Sydney Morning Herald's June 24 Next section. ( I hope that link isn't too long to work!)
I meant to blog about a completely different topic yesterday but got called on to fill in all day at TAFE. Hence the delay and my apologies to my faithful few subscribers! On the way to work as the train stopped and started its way down the line I read the paper.
Graeme Philipson's article was entitled Imagine a World without Copyright and while he was referring to download issues for music and films and videos he also referred to more traditional media. He seems to feel authors and artists should ONLY get a one off payment and no royalties since journalists dont get royalties.
Woo Graeme did you sign over the Adsense rights to the SMH for your article?
Where do you think your pay comes from? Maybe the money Fairfax gets from Adsense and other ads?
It's great that you are earning an income Graeme ... the rest of us however?
Graeme seems to feel copyright was introduced primarily for the benefit of publishers and certainly a more equitable ration of profit splitting between authors and publishers would be a good thing?
However ... Graeme you may be paying all your bills but the rest of us?
There are artists in various media of varying degrees of talent and skill who dont get regular commissions or huge one off payments? What do we live on between those one off payments?
Paypal donations from fans and patrons?
Many of us would like to be so lucky!
Google Adsense payments? Well if you're in the top ... is it 1% of bloggers... maybe?
The real issue should be more to make payment schemes more equitable for the simple solid reason that WE ALL NEED TO PAY BILLS!
The Internet might appear to be full of freebies but some one paid somewhere either by donating time they could have used for paid work or some third world worker got heavy metal poisoning recycling our used computer hardware and then there's power bills and the cost of maintaining and buying new hardware and ... need I go on?
In a World Without Copyright How do Artists Pay their bills?
How many part time or casual jobs have such great conditions and wages that you still have the time and energy to create after work?
Perhaps Graeme you might want to do an article encouraging people to have more support to artists. Later on today I'm emptying out my emergency/ special projects fund to pay my hlaf yearly medical fund bill . If anyone wants to help me refill tha tgap in my accounts I'm still trying to sell some tshirts and artwork and other stuff.
Graeme and other readers care to commission me to do some art work?
